BUSINESS EDUCATION STATEWIDE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (BESAC)
INSURANCE CURRICULUM UPDATE
The Insurance curriculum that BESAC began working on two years is in its final stages of completion. With the help of the Insurance Committee, composed of business CEOs and community college deans and faculty, we have developed the curriculum and have applied for a $1,200,000+ grant to move the curriculum forward. If we do not receive this grant, we will have approximately $30,000 from insurance companies that we will use for professional development for faculty to learn about the course content.
Promotional materials will be developed and made available to colleges to interest students in taking the classes. For colleges that sent us a letter of intent to include in the grant proposal, there will be other benefits, such as free online insurance classes from Insurance Educational Association (IEA).
Scheduled Insurance Classes. We have scheduled three, 3-hour classes to introduce faculty to the major insurance classes: INS 21—Principles of Property and Liability Insurance (3 Units); INS 22—Personal Insurance; and INS 23—Commercial Insurance (3 Units). These three courses are required for the insurance major. The 3 three-hour classes will be conducted by David Blakesley, Curriculum Director of IEA, via Video Conferencing. The schedule is shown below.
INS 21, September 23 INS 22, October 7 INS 23, October 28
All Video Conferencing sessions are scheduled from 1:00 to 4:00pm.
Colleges Interested in Taking the Classes. Any community college instructor or administrator interested in taking the three 3-hour courses listed should contact Kathy Craven at as soon as possible. The classes will be conducted through Video Conferencing.
If you wish to have the classes scheduled on your campus, contact Stan Leyva of San Mateo Community College by September 9 in order for him to make Video Conferencing arrangements to include your college as one of the sites. At this point, we know that Coastline College and College of San Mateo will hold video sessions at their colleges. For questions, please contact Kathy Craven or
