Workplace Communications Skills Necessary for Being Hired and Successful in the Workplace

The CIS General Operations and Analysis Team, led by Sally Kurz of Coastline College, developed the course, Project Management for Information Technology (IT). This capstone class is a natural for those involved with IT since it incorporates soft skills into established curriculum and includes significant emphasis on high security issues. Examples of some industry-identified soft skills that were created include topics such as: writing effective e-mail messages, handling calls with confidence and professionalism, coping with difficult audiences, facilitating effective meetings, team facilitation and decision making, etc.

A major focus of this group involved converting current courses to online delivery; while, at the same time, incorporating soft skills and security issues modules into the courses. The team developed the sample course outlines, sample lab activities, etc. A number of workshops on workplace communication were offered including the importance of team participation and soft skills.
