Technology Changes Drive Curriculum

The Communications Team, led by Warren Carter of Golden West College developed the following curriculum pieces: (1) modules that can be placed into already approved courses including new editing and scripting techniques, digital/analog conversion and DVC technology; (2) up-to-date animation courses; and (3) a certificate in computer animation geared toward the broadcast media; and (4) an instructional module on DVD Distribution Development that will be a stand-alone course common to all programs.  These courses were field-tested in spring, 2004.

Best practices included the following findings: (1) students learn high-level broadcast journalism skills when paired with a mentor who is a working professional within the field; (2) students gain more from their training if they are exposed to state-of-the-art equipment; (3) video editing skills are enhanced by the use of hands-on computer lab exposure; (4) journalists need to be exposed to some type of security training to understand the fundamentals of topics they are reporting; and (5) access to production-quality.
